Clashes in Somali capital kill seven

Fighting broke out between Somali troops backed by the African Union and guards of a former city official, Ahmed Dai.

Police in Somalia say seven people have been killed and eight injured after fighting broke out between Somali soldiers, supported by African Union troops, and fighters loyal to a former city official.

The government says Ahmed Dai’s guards fired on troops first, but his supporters accuse the Somali army of a politically motivated attack.

Four civilians were among the dead.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports.
