The US is marking half a century since three civil rights activists were killed by the Ku Klux Klan in the state of Mississippi during the ‘Freedom Summer’ campaign to get African-Americans registered to vote.
The murders sparked outrage across the country, and increased the number of black voters, but African-Americans remain under-represented in political office in some parts of the state.
