A surge in the number of undocumented children travelling illegally from Central America to the US has prompted a humanitarian crisis along Mexico’s borders. As many as 90,000 unaccompanied children may have entered the US from Central America this year alone.
A US law allows children who enter the country illegally to remain there until their case is heard by courts. Many jump onto freight trains in southern Mexico, hoping to get across the border.
