Taliban frees university staff in Afghanistan
About 33 professors and students are freed after remaining in captivity for nearly two weeks, Afghan officials say.
Taliban has released about 33 university professors and students seized nearly two weeks ago in the country’s east, Afghan officials have said.
Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, the deputy governor of Ghazni province, said the hostages were released overnight and early on Monday, following mediation by tribal elders in the region and the staff from the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Ahmadi said the staff of the Kandahar University were on their way to the capital, Kabul, earlier this month when their bus was stopped by the Taliban in the province’s Qarabagh district.
The Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, has confirmed their release in a statement via twitter.
