Iraqis flee violence to Kurdish areas

Comparative safety of semi-autonomous region draws thousands trying to escape from the violence in the country’s north.

Thousands of Iraqis have fled the violence in the country’s north to the oil-rich governorate of Kirkuk. Some 300,000 Iraqis have sought shelter in Iraq’s comparatively peaceful Kurdistan region over the past week as Sunni fighters swept through towns in a lightning offensive.
