India deploys army in troubled Assam state

Authorities in India have called in the army to restore order in Assam state, which is currently experiencing the worst outbreak of ethnic violence in two years.

Police said they had arrested 22 people for helping separatist rebels who were accused of killing more than 30 Muslims and forcing hundreds of villagers to flee to relief camps.

Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in the wake of the violence blamed on rebels from the Bodo tribe, who have long accused Muslim residents of migrating to India illegally from neighbouring Bangladesh.
