US mourns author and activist Maya Angelou

President Obama describes Maya Angelou as a “brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman”.

American poet, author and activist, Maya Angelou, has died at the age of 86.

Angelou died on Wednesday morning at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, her son, Guy B. Johnson, said in a statement.

She was best-known for her 1969 memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.

President Barack Obama called her “a brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman.”
