Earthquakes are a constant threat in the US state of California, where the San Andreas Fault is located.
A major quake erupts along both the northern and southern runs of the San Andreas once every 150 to 200 years. The last one that hit Los Angeles was in 1857, or 157 years ago. The last in the north was 1906.
Now seismologists are examining the data produced by the quake in Chile to see if any lessons can be learnt.
