Battle for France’s Alstom ramps up

As General Electric and Siemens vie to buy the country’s leading energy company, workers worry about possible job cuts.

The battle to buy one of France’s leading energy companies is intensifying.

Both Siemens and General Electric have expressed interest in acquiring part of the French firm, Alstom.

But Alstom employees worry that, if GE buys the company, it will strip assets and cut jobs.

Arnaud Montebourg, France’s economy minister, has not ruled out a sale to GE, but he would prefer to make a deal with the German engineering company, Siemens.
