Guinea-Bissau’s rich fish stocks in peril

The rich fish stocks of the West African country of Guinea-Bissau are under threat from foreign trawlers, according to the UN.

The UN says foreign boats often operate illegally and little of their catch is processed locally.

Locals want to be able to export their fish, but the country has no proper processing facilities, making it hard for them to
compete with foreign trawlers.

The UN is concerned that unregulated fishing by foreign ships will deplete fish stocks in the country’s territorial waters.
