Libya detains migrants bound for Europe

More than 400 migrants, mostly from Somalia and Eritrea, detained as they try to cross to Europe in small boats.

Libyan authorities have detained nearly 500 migrants in boats bound for Europe.

Despite the risk of arrest and detention, especially for sub-Saharan Africans, Libya continues to be a major transit point as well as a final destination for those seeking better work opportunities.

Most of those who get caught end up in rundown detention centers outside of Tripoli and don’t know when they’ll be released.
