Kashmiri students suspended over Pakistan win
University students in Meerut reportedly suspended for celebrating Pakistan’s recent victory over India in cricket match
An Indian university has suspended about 70 Kashmiri students for cheering Pakistan during a recent India-Pakistan cricket match, NDTV reports.
The channel said that the students of the privately-run Swami Vivekananda Subharti University in the city of Meerut were suspended following a clash between rival group of students.
Pakistan defeated India in a thrilling limited over Asia Cup match played in Bangladesh earlier in the week.
The Kashmiri students were reportedly celebrating Pakistan’s victory, when other students objected. It led to a clash and the university authorities suspended the Kashmiri students to prevent “tensions from further escalating”.
NDTV quoted some university officials as saying that the students committed an “anti-national act” and also destroyed some hostel property.
About 200 Kashmiri students are pursuing engineering and law degrees in the university.
