Deaths in shooting at Turkey institute

Former employee kills six people and shoots himself dead at government institute in Kars province, state media reports.

At least seven people have been shot dead and one injured at a Turkish Statistics Institute office in the eastern province of Kars, state media reported.

TRT Haber TV channel said on Wednesday that a former TUIK employee who was sacked was responsible for the attack. The individual shot himself after killing six people.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent said it was an act of revenge by a disgruntled former employee who was deprived of severance benefits.

“It doesn’t seem that there are any political intentions. Kars is a very calm area and has no history of political unrest,” Al Jazeera’s Omar Khashram said, reporting from Ankara, the capital.
