Suspended India police officer shoots family

A senior police officer in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh has shot dead his wife before turning the gun on himself, reports say.

Devnarayan Patel, 40, the Jagdalpur City Superintendent of Police, killed his wife Pratima, 35, and also shot his two children Aryan and Puja, at his official residence before killing himself. 

While his wife died on the spot, the children have been taken to a hospital.

Patel had been suspended a day earlier following a verbal spat with a local judge. News reports quoted sources as saying Patel was disturbed over his suspension, which probably prompted him to take the extreme step.
