US state gets high return on cannabis sales

Colorado expects to rake in tens of millions of dollars in taxes in first return since the drug was made legal.

Cannabis producers in the US state of Colorado have paid taxes to state authorities.for the first time on Thursday.

Selling the drug became legal last month, and retailers are expected to contribute tens of millions of dollars in taxes a year.

But cannabis shops hired private security to get the money to state coffers – a federal law bans retailers opening bank accounts, meaning they pay their tax bills in cash.
