The kidnapping of Colombian general Ruben Alzate by FARC rebels has brought widespread attention to the plight of people living in the remote northwestern region of Choco.
The area is among one of the poorest in Colombia and is a breeding ground for rebels and illegal activities.
Residents say the general was trying to start social programmes to benefit the locals before he was abducted.
