Catalans to hold unofficial independence vote

Sunday’s vote is non-binding as Spanish government blocked an official referendum, calling it illegal.

Residents of Spain’s Catalonia region are to have their say on Sunday as to whether they want to live in an independent state.

The vote is non-binding and unofficial, as the Spanish government blocked an official referendum, calling it illegal.

Nonetheless, some Catalans already live as if they are part of a separate nation.

Al Jazeera’s Claudio Lavanga reports from Barcelona.
