UK defences prevent flooding amid heavy rain

Cutbacks to Environmental Agency cast doubts over future protections as strong tides hammer coastline.

Areas in the United Kingdom have been battered by huge tidal surges, heavy rain and gale force winds for days.

In the southwest of the country, the worst seems to be over after a modern defence system held back the tides.

But facing major budget cuts, it is unclear whether the Environmental Agency, the group that looks after the flood defences, will be able to cope with future storms.
