Federal forces in Mexico have stepped up their efforts to control the western state of Michoacan, where local vigilantes and the powerful Knights Templar cartel have fought for control over the state’s lawless regions.

The government, which has largely been absent from the battle, is now trying to convince the groups to disarm.
