China-Japan rivalry heats up in Africa

Japanese PM’s pledge to boost investment in continent’s emerging economies seen by Chinese as diplomatic one-upmanship.

Tensions between Asian rivals Japan and China have extended their battleground further afield, to Africa. China has accused Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, of trying to hijack its diplomatic efforts in the continent. Abe’s last stop – in Ethiopia – is an attempt to strengthen relations between the two countries.
