Fifty years ago, a doctor’s report shocked Americans and the world when it revealed that smoking kills.

In the United States, smoking rates have decreased by 59 percent from 1960s levels, and anti-smoking campaigns are widespread.

But smoking is still prevalent globally, with millions of people dying each year from tobacco-related diseases.
