Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an al-Qaeda linked group, are trying to hold on to their northern Syrian stronghold of al-Raqqa in the face of an assault from a loose coalition of more moderate opposition Syrian fighters.
Food and other supplies cannot reach residents of the besieged city because of the ongoing violence.
Images from al-Raqqa show people gathering in desperation outside a bakery, but with no flour getting in. Reports indicate that in some areas, people have not eaten bread for three days.
Al Jazeera’s Rula Amin reports from Beirut in neighbouring Lebanon.
