Maldives to elect new president

Voters say they want new leader to look beyond the beaches and focus on economic and social problems.

Voters in the Maldives are going to the polls this weekend to elect a new leader.

In February, violent protests forced President Mohamed Nasheed from office in what he called a coup, and a new government took over.

But many people say they want the top job to go to someone who will look beyond the nation’s beaches and focus on economic and social problems.
