Wildcards of Germany’s general election

Post-Communist left party, and the far-right National Democratic Party face a serious challenge in ever coming to power.

Al Jazeera is touring four parts of Germany ahead of the September 22 federal election.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party is expected to win the biggest share of the vote, but it will very likely need to form a coalition with another party to govern again.

Two of the parties competing are popular with voters in the poorer parts of the country.

However, because of their ideas, the post-Communist left party and the far-right National Democratic Party face a serious challenge in ever coming to power.

That is because of their links to the past in a country which struggled through two dictatorships in the last century.
