Rains inundate 300 villages in NE India
Monsoon downpours have triggered flooding in Assam state, forcing thousands of people from their homes

Torrential rains across northeastern India have caused flash flooding as the mighty Brahmaputra River has burst its banks in a number of places. Over 300 villages in eight districts have been affected in Assam State.
Torrents of water have washed away homes and destroyed crops as the incessant downpours flowed across northeastern Arunachal Pradesh. This resulted in the river swelling way beyond capacity.
Hectares of farmland and around 30,000 animals were swept away by the flood waters. At least 5,000 people have left their waterlogged villages and sought shelter in relief camps.
Mountainous Assam faced the brunt of the flooding and the worst affected districts were Morigaon and Dhemaji.
Assam’s tea crop has been affect and that could have an impact on prices over the coming months. Unfortunately, the seasonal rains are of course expected to continue over the next few days and indeed weeks.
