The Colombian government has admitted for the first time that it committed serious human rights violations during its 50-year battle with leftist rebels.

The admission came from President Juan Manuel Santos, who was appearing in court to defend a constitutional amendment allowing peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
