NGO comes to aid of Brazil slum-dwellers

Volunteers are building homes for those living in most precarious of housing in country’s favelas.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff says she is determined to wipe out extreme poverty in her country by 2014.

But millions still live in slums known as favelas.

They are some of the nearly 11 million people – or 6 percent of the population – in Brazil who still live in the most precarious of housing. Their homes are often made of nothing more than cardboard and plastic sheets.

But volunteers of an NGO, called Roof, are trying to change that.
