Uganda event draws region’s Christians
Thousands of pilgrims from East Africa march for days from central town to Kampala to observe Martyrs’ Day.

Christians from around the world, mainly East Africa, have flocked to the central Ugandan town of Namugongo to observe Martyrs’ Day, the largest religious event in the region.
Tens of thousands of Christians have marched for days from Namugongo to the capital Kampala to honour 32 young men, members of the court of King Mwanga II of Buganda, who were burned to death for their refusal to renounce Christianity on June 3, 1886.
