Thousands of Tuareg bedouins have fled the north of Mali during months of conflict.

Rebels declared independence in the region of Azawad last year. But since January, French and Malian troops have been trying to drive them out.

The Azawad rebels have accused Western powers of supporting the government in Bamako while turning a blind eye to alleged atrocities committed by its army.
