As French forces speed up their withdrawal from Mali, challenges of training the country’s own army remain.
Its soldiers lack discipline and there is a language barrier. But the biggest issue in the minds of many Malians in the north of the country is human rights.
French troops have been a reassuring presence for civilians. But when most of the troops go home, the mood could change.
