Libyans struggle to secure volatile east

Restoring law and order in Libya after the death of Muammar Gaddafi is proving a difficult challenge, particularly in the east.

Benghazi has seen some of the worst violence since Gaddafi’s death in 2011. The army is appealing for support from tribal elders, but the military may not be strong enough to tackle illegal armed groups.
