Bangladesh minister defends safety norms

Talking to Al Jazeera, Dipu Moni defends government’s initiatives to improve labour rights and safety standards.

The foreign minister of Bangladesh has defended the government’s initiatives to improve labour rights in the country, amid mounting pressure over perceived lax safety standards.

Dipu Moni spoke to Al Jazeera as the death toll from the collapsed factory complex near Dhaka passed 400.

She said the government of Sheikh Hasina has been working on improving safety conditions in workplaces in collaboration with the owners of factories, with labour organisations and with international organisations.
