Western clothing companies are facing increasing criticism over the deaths of more than 300 garment workers after a building collapsed in Bangladesh.
Activists have said that the pressure on working conditions, pay and health and safety at such factories all comes from overseas retailers, whom they accused of sacrificing people’s lives for profit.
Stung by the accusations, clothing companies like the UK’s Primark have promised to investigate and provide support.
Meanwhile, workers groups in Bangladesh said they are against a boycott of cheap clothes on the grounds that it would only increase their poverty. Instead they are pushing for improved labour protection laws.
