Activists fear anti-gay persecution in Russia

In January, the Russian parliament voted unanimously in favour of a bill that makes it illegal for the country’s gay community to hold public events or distribute information to minors.

It prohibited what lawmakers called the “propaganda of homosexuality.” But that term has no legal definition – and activists worry it could be broadly interpreted.

The law is symptomatic of a broader problem with homophobia in Russian society.
