India charity gets amputees back on feet
Locally-designed prosthetic limb is cheap to produce and hailed for its functionality.

Thousands of amputees in India are now able to walk again, thanks to a local charity that developed a prosthetic limb called the Jaipur foot.
The organisation uses innovation and cutting-edge science to keep costs low – the leg’s exterior, for example, is made of beige plastic irrigation piping, melted to fit.
The foot costs around $40 to manufacture and according to the charity’s founder, it is more functional than Western designs that cost about $10,000.
