Challenges remain for UN mission in Darfur

Tribal disputes over natural resources prove obstacle to UNAMID’s mandate to protect civilians.

Almost six years since its inception, the UN African Mission in Darfur, UNAMID, has grown in both size and experience.

Despite continued violence in the region, the forces have already started to reduce in numbers based on need.

Still, clashes among tribal groups over resources have proved a challenge to the UNAMID’s core mandate of protecting civilians.
