Ghost towns amid China’s building boom

In Beijing, affordable accommodation is almost impossible to find, but newly built cities in some rural areas are empty.

Housing has become prohibitively expensive in established Chinese cities, and as provincial governments expect more rural Chinese people to move to urban areas, they are creating new cities.

Yet hundreds of apartments in these new cities remain empty, with speculators driving up the prices.
