German Social Democrats vote to join Merkel

After weeks of uncertainty party agrees to enter a coalition with Angela Merkel paving the way for her third term.

Weeks of uncertainty have come to an end as Angela Merkel received the backing she needs for a historic third term as German Chancellor. Members of the Social Democrats have voted to enter a Grand Coalition with Angela Merkel and the Christian Democrats.

A no vote could have plunged Germany into crisis and damaged European efforts for banking reform.
