Mexico protesters warn against oil reforms

Government says state-run oil industry needs overhaul, but critics say it would amount to a giveaway to private firms.

Mexicans opposed to reform of the country’s state-run oil industry have been protesting for months. They say reform would amount to a giveaway to private transnational firms – in particular US companies.

But the ruling PRI party and its business-friendly ally, the National Action Party, say Pemex is a moribund company that needs a major overhaul.
