Iran and six world powers have reached a landmark deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for limited sanctions relief.
While the West has accused the Iranian government of attempting to develop nuclear weapons capabilities, Iran maintains its programme is intended for peaceful purposes, such as energy generation and medical research.
The deal provides a chance for Iran to “prove it,” US Secretary of State John Kerry says.
Under the terms of the agreement, Tehran will halt progress on enrichment capacity and provide unprecedented access to international weapons inspectors.
The deal also provides some relief from crippling sanctions, including the release of billions of dollars in Iranian funds frozen in foreign bank accounts and renewed trade in precious metals, petrochemicals and aircraft parts.
