India launches first all-women bank

Government hopes to fight gender discrimination by establishing bank staffed mostly by women for women.

Millions of women across India work and run their own businesses, but only 26 percent of them have a bank account. It is also hard for them to get loans because property and other assets are traditionally given to men. Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, says he hopes the Bharatiya Mahila Bank, the country’s first all-women bank, will help the fight against gender discrimination.
