New Yemen charter could ban child marriages

Body drafting country’s new constitution wants to lift minimum age for marriage to 18, but proposal faces opposition.

Girls as young as eight are routinely forced to marry men up to five times their age in Yemen.

Now, the organisation drafting the country’s constitution wants to end child marriage and make the minimum age 18.

But some clerics and tribal leaders say they will block the motion.
