Rare flooding fills roads in Saudi capital

Riyadh sets up a disaster management centre in the holy city of Mecca and is forced to close roads and schools.

Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, closing down roads and disrupting daily life.

Traffic has almost been halted and some drivers were stranded in their cars, visuals circulated on social media showed. Some of the cars drifted with the current of water on the roads as rain water hit Riyadh.

The government urged people to stay indoors since more rain is forecast for the entire weekend.

Other parts of Saudi Arabia have also been affected by heavy rainfall.
