Iraq appeals for US aid amid surging violence

PM Maliki calls for US help to stop sectarian violence, which has claimed at least 7,000 lives this year.

Iraq’s prime minister is appealing for US help to stop sectarian violence in his country.

Nouri al-Maliki made the plea as he continued his official visit to Washington, DC, the US capital.

This year more than 7,000 people have been killed in sectarian and other attacks, as violence has surged following a full US troop withdrawal at the end of 2012.
