US stops record numbers of illegal migrants

Almost 2,000 caught trying to cross into Puerto Rico by boat – up from five in 2009.

Every year the United States Coast Guard intercepts an average of six thousand migrants trying to enter the US illegally.

There’s been a big increase in the number trying to cross the dangerous Mona Pass – from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico.

It’s gone from five in 2009 to nearly 1,800 so far in 2013. Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallagher reports.
