Snow brings the UK to a standstill
The UK and Ireland were covered with winter white on Friday and will be spending the rest of the weekend cleaning out
On Friday, the snow that moved through the UK, brought many communities to a standstill.
Closures on the M4 motorway, cancellations at London’s Heathrow Airport, and thousands of schools closed meant that many people’s day was significantly changed.
Most of the UK saw at least 5cm of snow, but it was in Wales that the snow accumulated to over 25cm. Southern Wales also saw power lines go down and over 10,000 people were without electricity by the afternoon.
By early Saturday morning, the snow had begun to subside, but the UK Met Office was still warning that severe cold and icy conditions were going to be a major issue through Monday.
While the clean-up has begun on the roads and on the streets, more snow is expected. A storm from the south will be making its way north and conditions are expected to deteriorate again by Monday evening.
The Pennines, across northern England, will receive another 12cm, and in Scotland it could be up to 40cm that the Grampians see.
