Spanish region pushes for economic autonomy

Catalunya is capitalising on Madrid’s economic problems to push for financial independence.

Leaders of the northern Catalunya region of Spain are using the nation’s financial troubles to bolster support for its continued calls for economic independence from Madrid.

The push comes ahead of talks between Angela Merkel, the Gernan chancellor, and Mariano Rajoy, her Spanish counterpart, on how to deal with Spain’s economic troubles.
