Drug gangs controlling two of Rio de Janeiro’s most notorious slums have banned the sale of crack cocaine.
Gang leaders say their move was motivated by problems the drug use brought, like addicts robbing homes and killing each other. But city officials say the move is a ruse to persuade police to call off operations in the slums.
