Fighting rages for control of Aleppo airport

State media makes first admission that battle has reached strategic international airport in Syria’s largest city.

Fierce fighting has raged between rebel fighters and government forces for control of the airport in the northern city of Aleppo, a strategic target for both sides.

Syria’s state news agency has said “armed terrorist groups” – the Damascus shorthand for the rebels – had been pushed from both sides of the airport by government troops.

It was the first official acknowledgement combat had neared the strategic international gateway to the country’s largest city.

Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane reports.
