Israel seeks to draft ultra-Orthodox

Criticism of the insular Haredi community at the heart of debate about the country’s identity.

A controversial committee in Israel has released a report calling for the country’s ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews to be drafted for military service.

It has become a growing contentious issue that may threaten the coalition government. Many Israelis are resentful of the fact that the rest of the country is footing the bill for this one community which lives off government stipends.
